Quick report from Spike TV special hype UWC 2: Battleground, live from The Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas.
Show opens with Chris Hero promo where crowd continually peppers him with “You Don’t Be-long!” chants. Hero says he is head & shoulders above the rest of the roster, and UWC 1 was just the start of his ascension up the ladder of success. Carlito interrupts to point out to Hero that even Carlito doesn’t work as hard Hero does, isn’t as innovative as Hero, doesn’t wash his hair as much as Hero does, and likely doesn’t care as much as Hero does, he’s still achieved more than Hero ever will, and he’ll kick Hero’s ass at UWC 2! Hero takes exception by slapping Carlito in the face, which gets a “Das Not Cool” and apple spit in the face for Hero! Hero looks worried when suddenly the lights to off, and Taz appears on the screen, reminding Hero of their match tonight, and telling Hero to “Beat me, if you can...survive, IF I LET YOU!”
Match 1: 5 Corner Survuval (first fall wins)
Epico vs. Kenny King vs. Joe Hennig vs. Mark Jindrak vs. Doug Furnas
Match eventually breaks down into big brawl, allowing Hennig to steak a pin on King with a Perfect-Plex. The result causes the partners of each man to enter the ring for a huge 11-man brawl. During this, Incognito is hurt by a triple team move from The 3 Kenny’s.
WINNER in 12:22: Joe Hennig pinfall via Perfect-Plex on Kenny King
Backstage promo from Bad News Brown where Lauren informs him that Brock Lesnar hasn’t signed their contract yet. Lauren then tells Bad News that Brock called for a public contract signing in the ring tonight!
Match 2: Hiroshi Tanahasi vs. Human Tornado
Competitive match featuring two of the participants in the Ultimate-X Sprint at UWC 2. Tanahashi has the match won when Tornado sneaks in a small package for the pinfall.
WINNER in 13:47: Human Tornado via small package
Backstage promo with The Great Muta. Lauren continually asks him questions about the UWC match against Taz, and Muta is seemingly ignoring her. She finally asks if he has anything to say at all, and he responds with a green mist spray at the camera.
Match 3: Aaron Stevens (/Michelle McCool & KC James) vs. Amasis (w/Ophidian)
At the start of this match, it’s announced that the two teams will face each other at UWC 2. The match is competitive for the first 5 minutes, with Amasis having an answer for everything Stevens throws at him. Stevens starts to get frustrated, leading to interference from KC James. McCool distracts the ref, but he turns around in time to call for the DQ. McCool yells at her men, who in turn attack The Osirian Portal.
WINNER in 5:45: Amasis by disqualification
The Teacher’s Pets continue their beatdown on The Osirian Portal, with McCool proclaiming on the mic that they’re never going to lose again, starting at UWC 2. The fans show their displeasure, so McCool challenges anyone in the building to shut her up. That challenge is answered, by Takeshi Morishima!
Morishima hits the ring and gets a few shots in on Stevens before James pulls him out and the Pets bail. Morishima then destroys both Amasis and Ophidian with backdrop drivers! This brings out Sheamus, who says he saw Morishima at UWC 1, and he was impressed. Tonight, he’s not impressed. He says they both lost on pay-per-view, and both have something to prove. He challenges Morishima to a match at UWC 2, and Morishima nods to accept!
We then cut to a long video package to promote the Best 2 out of 3 Falls Match that will see Ultimo Dragon defend the UWC Cruiserweight Championship against AJ Styles. Both men are interviewed in the promo package, where Dragon (through a translator) talks about the history of great cruiserweight wrestling and how the current perception is skewed by people expecting an X-Division with more high risk and less technical expertise. AJ talks about being an X-Division pioneer, and how he can adapt to any style, and expects to walk out of UWC 2 a World Champion.
In ring contract signing for Brock Lesnar vs. Bad News Brown
Brock stands in the ring holding the contract, and Brown is out to question what he’s waiting for. Brock says he’s worried about Brown’s temper, and thinks he could pull the match into a double DQ or double count-out, taking them both out of the title hunt. Brock wants to be sure we’ll have a winner. Dashbee appears on the screen, telling them that he’ll make both Lesnar-Brown and Muta-Taz matches where “there must be a winner.” Brock basically says “hey, great!” and signs. Bad News then steps face to face with Brock, who just shakes his head and punches Bad News in the mouth! This leads to apull-apart brawl between both men.[/i]
Before our main event, Adam Pearce and Lenny Leonard inform everyone that the card for UWC 2 will be released later tonight, and that Incognito will be able to compete at UWC 2 despite an injured shoulder.
TV Main Event: Taz vs. Chris Hero
Hero runs early, but once Taz catches him, he brutalizes Hero. Hero eventually pokes Taz in the eye and goes on the offensive. Hero gets the crowd into the palm of his hand, until Taz just unloads on him with suplexes to a huge pop! Taz eventually locks in a Tazmission for the tap-out victory.
WINNER in 9:58: Taz via tap-out with the Tazmission
Taz then cuts a promo on Muta, saying the fans were screwed out of their showdown thanks to Hero at UWC 1, and he plans to give them what they want at UWC 2. Taz starts his catchphrase “Beat me if you can--“ when the lights go out! When they come back on, Muta is standing over a fallen Taz, who has red mist all over his face!
