C'mon, don't do that, Skids. I'm not a workrate wanker. I don't watch ROH regularly specifically because their stories and characters don't draw me in enough. And I think TNA is leaning much more to WWE like "sports entertainment" the last couple of years than ROH like "workrate." Some think too much and that TNA has become no different than WWE.
The first 2/3rds of the match didn't strike me as bad because it had poor workrate and I've never once given a match a star rating. Flair just looked bad. And I joked about the drunk thing but he could have just been emotionally racked or physically exhausted or just been unlucky enough to have an off night. But I know what Flair is capable of these days and he wasn't even close to it last night. Last night was the Flair that makes me watch him and say "God, I hope you retire because you clearly can't do this anymore and I fear for your very life at this moment." There were flips from HBK that he failed to get to, slams and suplexes that he couldn't lift HBK for, a pinning spot where HBK was supposed to bridge up out with Flair on his chest, and Flair clearly didn't have enough in him to help so HBK couldn't lift Flair from that position. It was just sloppy as hell and Flair looked every day of his age. And trust me, when Flair came out I was dying for him to pull out a performance at least on part with his recent ones just so the non-fans mocking him would stop. Because it made me sad to see him look that bad.
But Flair seemed to catch up a bit towards the end and the emotion kicked in. And by the time the kicks and figure fours and pins were going people were watching and the drama took over. And
Like I said, I wonder how many of the people who LOVED it were alone and how many who thought it was a mess were with groups. Because if I was sitting there just watching it, soaking in the reality of the match maybe I would have been wringing my hands from the get go. But I wasn't. I was sitting there with this for the first half of the match.
"Wow. THAT is the gayest ring attire ever!"
"Why does he have a cape?"
"GO HBK! COME ON, SHAWN!"
"Oh My God! How old is he!?"
"Why is he so red?!"
"HAHAHA!"
"He couldn't even lift him!"
"This is depressing."
"This is boring."
"Wow, he missed that."
"He looks like he's drunk."
"He looks like he's gonna keel over."
And that can affect you and make you feel different than if you were sitting in a room where you were just thinking over that it was the last Flair match at WM against his friend.
EDIT: And I'm not minding the lack of Arn or the locker room last night too much because I'm presuming they do right tonight. I was just disappointed as hell that we didn't get Arn spine bustering HBK or if he wasn't up to that, just tossing Flair a weapon or something. Because with Flair's career on the line, Arn helping him try to win IS Flair. He is the Enforcer and his job is to help the Nature Boy win. He wasn't on the job last night and I was just disappointed as hell. But I'll live if I see him tonight.
