I'm with Tard. There's more liberals over there than conservatives but its not like people start threads every week for the latest conservative flub or bad line. It's easy to rearviewmirror what you think people would do, but I think if the situation was reversed in some form or fashion, one of the "don't call me a liberal" folks would have been all over this one there. From my vantage point (RepubliKKKan - thx Loki), there's more than enough piling on that happens. Maybe the threads themselves aren't as frequent as I perceive them to be, but the piling on that happens in there once they are posted...holy shit. Props to Krydor for even attempting to deal with it...

I don't think they're terribly frequent at all. And in years past they've been MUCH more frequent as I'm sure Krydor can attest to. During the height of BBMN, Mr Mysterious, and Ultra Magnus it was pretty consistent. And Krydor and Army were the only conservatives running around. And OOKyle, I guess. The forum was MAJORLY slanted. In the last year or two I've seen 3 things which I think to be true. (1) A lot of people lost their passion/interest in that forum. Probably due to it being SO passionate and SO nasty in years past (again, as I'm sure Krydor will attest to). It feels like a lot of folks either retreated from the forum (as I did) or cooled off a bit and decided to limit their rants (as BBMN and Army seem to have). (2) A number of the shit stirrers are gone or less active. Mr M seems to pop up from time to time, Magnus does only rarely, and Kyle's gone. So are idiots like Omega/Mcian and Pistol Pez. (3) There seem to be more conservatives in there then there were in years past. It used to be 2 or 3 guys against an army of liberals. Seems like there are a few more people around these days. Of course there's also a few more liberals I notice so maybe it all evens off. Still, 2 conservatives vs 6 liberals is different than 5 conservatives vs 10 liberals.

I don't know. Maybe it will pick up come election time. But it seems like a very different place. Then again I don't pay enough attention so my perceptions are probably wrong. I'm probably not all that qualified to speak on it since I haven't posted consistently in there in years.

It IS liberally slanted though. Because more posters are liberals. But liberals jumping on conservatives and vice versa is normal. And the predominant group having the larger influence and being a bit more vocal is natural too.

Fair enough and I do appreciate the history lesson and putting some this in relative context. While I've been on the boards a few years, its only in the past 6 - 9 mos that I've ventured beyond the current wrestling and divas areas so I don't have the relativity to relate to. So I'm seeing things w/o the context, but by your comments I'm glad I WASN'T viewing this back in the peak.

Again, I don't know how true my current perception is. Krydor and maybe Optard would know that better. Krydor's been there the entire time. I am realistically viewing the current OO CE forum from the outside so I would in no way be surprised if I was off.

But yeah, years ago (specifically during the '04 election and run to it) the place was VERY active and VERY nasty. Really just a horrible place. And I know I used to then exchange u2us with people I had fought with making sure we weren't carrying over our disagreements elsewhere (especially Army). Threads would start daily and within hours would be huge, knockdown fights. And within days they'd be pages long. And it was largely the same guys always going at each other with the same fights, just with the nastiness escalating. I'm sure a lot of that remains but it doesn't seem even half as bad as it was. But again, I could be flat out wrong on that.

And I do half expect to find that its cyclical. Come '08 elections I'm sure I'll have more information and be more interested. So will lots others. So I half expect to see the forum get as nasty and active as it was in '03-'04.

I have noticed more conservatives lately, and I actually think that is great. GoVols is a very conservative guy, and he and I were actually able to have a respectful conversation on ideas. It is nice to try and see the other point of view.

But then sometimes, it just gets REALLY nasty.

Krydor and I had a long drawn out debate on there that was kinda nasty toward the end, and election time, man, that was brutal (and yet, oddly fun)

I think now, you have debates spring up occasionally, like the one currently being talked about, and they may spawn several pages, but usually they remain fairly mild.

the Presidential election in 2008 will get nasty again. My hope (obviously) is that a democrat wins, not just because I have a healthy dislike for republicans, but also because I think it would be interesting to see how that forum turns once the other side is in power. Right now the liberals are attacking and the conservatives are on the defense. It will be intereting to see how things go should that be reversed

It's pretty simple - those who frequent a wrestling board probably aren't going to vote Republican. I can't think of more than 5. Krydor, Vols, Army, Tex and myself. I posted some stuff but mostly lurked and Jesus Christ was it nasty, especially between Krydor and BBMN. It went from a healthy debate to outright hatred. Pretty vicious stuff.

The nastiest were Ultra Magnus vs. ArmyofOne. Krydor vs. BBMN was nasty but not as bad as those two.

ArmyofOne hardly posts now, and pretty much doesn't post in CE anymore. Perhaps he's busy overseas a lot. His first CE break was when we was sent to Afghanastan. Magnus stopped posting about a year ago. I don't even think he lurks anymore. Something about his personal life perhaps.

Krydor vs. Eli doesn't seem as harsh as some of the other feuds.

Sol, why do you suppose those who frequent wrestling boards don't vote republican? For some reason I think wrestling fans would be split down the middle, perhaps even more on the repub side.

Because we're mostly in the 18-35 range and Republicans tend to get their votes from a slightly older range. At least that's my take on it.

I never got too wrapped up in politics to really debate about it. You think your way, I think mine. Hell my best friend is the polar opposite of me when it comes to politics but that has never gotten in the way of our friendship. It's not worth it.

I think Army has hopped around a lot in the last year or so and I believe he might be sent back to Iraq in the near future. But from what I gather he also just got fed up with CE. Magnus posts in the sports forum a couple of times a year and I gather Jeb keeps up with him.

Yeah, its odd. It was traditionally Magnus vs Krydor and Army vs BBMN. And honestly, they were pretty well evenly matched and used the same styles/approaches. But when those two fights crossed over and it became Magnus/Army and Krydor/BBMN THEN it got crazy. I never really thought of that. That was just a styles clash that seemed to drive things up a notch.

Hey, if there are 5 regular conservative posters in CE right now that's about twice as many as there were back then. Optard's a Republican too, right? CiG is too. I'm not sure how much either post there though. And isn't Y2G conservative or am I just unfairly presuming he is because he's Isreali?

Moose, I love that you want the presidential election to be decided in part for the purposes of a sociological experiment with a small group of computer literate wrestling fans. Now I do too. If I can't decide how to vote I may allow that to swing my vote.

I came on board in 2004 during the madness. I usually posted in CE. I liked it once, but don't go there as much anymore.

It seems like the past year or so all the debates eventually boil down to Krydor vs. BBMN. And - no offense Krydor, 'cause I know you post here, too - if you've read one battle between those two you've read 'em all. It seemed like the whole forum stopped being an exchange of ideas a while ago and became an "I'm right!" "No, I'M right!" "No, you're WRONG!" and on and on.

The last good thread I can remember was the "Israel attacks" thread. We all exchanged ideas, with people being corrected and *gasp!* admitting they were wrong and not taking offense at it.

I'd love it if we could have a good exchange of ideas. But from what I've seen people tend to stay away because of the ideological stiffness from the main participants. Great case in point, Tex: From what I remember, your first venture into the CE threads was greeted with a pretty strong assault, right?

And Lucky - keep the hope alive, brother. Mitt is governor of Massachusetts. There's a greater than normal chance he's a closet Log Cabin gay Republicans.

Yeah - I don't want to rehash the whole thing because this isn't about point for point who said what or how it played out, but suffice it to say you remember correctly (and if I didn't say it then, thanks for helping me navigate out of those waters when I encountered what to me was the unexpected as a noob CE poster).

I'm all for rationale (key word) discussion of things and if I'm making shitty points (or making points shittily), I'm all for hearing that feedback. But the stiffness that exists generally precludes me from posting as feel..if post, gotta be prepared for a dissertationesque argument on things when most of the counterpoints are general barbs.

Thanks guys for entertaining this discussion. I'm glad we can all make somewhat light of things given the diversity of backgrounds and opinions that exist here.

Hey, the greatest fued of all time in CE was Me and Magnus. BBMN wishes he was Magnus. I never actually disliked Magnus. I don't actually dislike BBMN, I sent him a Smackdown tape, for Chrissakes. I can dislike, and intensely dislike, specific political opinons.

That whole what happens in CE, stays in CE is one of the best unwritten rules ever. It's even better than: if you wouldn't eat it, why would you f**k it?

I'm not fueding, as far as I know, with Eli. We might be, as I have a monster post I promised to make sometime today. The thread may have spun out of control by then, I don't honestly know.

In the end, those threads degenerate, and I am more than willing to take my share of the blame for that. I have an entrenched position on certain issues, others have the exact opposite entrenched position. I'm not willing to budge, therefore conflict ensues.

I do enjoy the conflict, truth be told. I am able to refine my positions. Overall, it's far better than an echo chamber. I would hope I provide a similar benefit for those who don't agree with me.

If not, so what? The cool thing about political discussion is that no is going to die because of it.
