I voted for Spidey, but I knew Bats would win. I had no doubt that it would end up Bats vs. Spider.

I should've known better given the level of DC geekdom around here. I'm a Marvel mark through and through. That's why my submissions for DC villains are all from Batman or Superman.

You know, it was possible to believe that Spidey would win without being an idiot. Shocking, but true!

I thought Spidey might win. If you re-read some of the arguments in the Spidey/Supes thread you can see why.

I'm a huge Bats mark, but I voted for Spidey. From a casual fan perspective, there's not much difference between Spidey and Bats - both wear spandex costumes, both are named after animals, both go around fighting crime and beating up bad guys.

But from a hardcore comic fan perspective, the two characters are completely different. Their attitudes. Their outlook on life. The way they relate to other people. Their personal qualities.

Batman is a master strategist, a detective, super-smart and driven beyond belief. He is a great hero. He also sticks to the shadows and uses fear and intimidation as primary weapons. He's moody, angry and seems to have little joy in his life. He has little in life that he considers important beyond his mission.

Spidey, on the other hand is also smart and driven. But he is also fun, funny and has a human side that Bats lacks. He takes pleasure in a number of things in life. He has a similar mission to Batman, but he doesn't take it quite as far as Bats does. Lucky and a few other did a great job earlier of bringing up Spidey's points, so I won't bring them up again here.

When you talk about a superhero the things that comes to mind for me is someone in bright colored tights fighting crime and tossing off one-liners in the middle of a fight scene, with the whole thing permeated with an ultimate feel-good vibe because you know that somehow, someway, it will all come out right in the end. Spidey encapsulates all that. Batman is a bit to dark and gritty for that image.

To put it another way - I can't see Batman (the current iteration - the Dark Knight Detective Batman that has been active since the 80s) referring to himself as a superhero. A hero, yes, but not a superhero.

Going tin I thought it was a tossup between Batman, Spiderman, and Superman. Judging from some of the anti-Superman sentiment I figured he would lose and I thought Batman would win against Spiderman but I wouldn't call it a done deal.

As far as the villians go I'm thinking Venom will win since everybody seems to love him but Joker may be a strong candidate as well.

Damn, sorry man, I completely missed this post. Yeah, I didn't (and don't) think Venom has the proverbial snowball's chance. At a 3-seed, he already has done a little better than I would have thought, though. I would have guessed 4 or 5.

well in terms of movie villians he's a great choice. he's visually very cool, and he's not a BAD character at all. vemon's very cool, especially when he's used right, which to be honest hasn't been done in years. that's part of the problem.

in this case venom's going up against a lot of classic villians from both companies who have years of history and are still to this day considered major guys. venom, on the other hand, is a fairly newer creation who started off really strong, then got over exposed, then got turned into a mediocre character at best. hell, he's not even eddie brock anymore. against the rest (or most) of the guys on this list, he just doesn't hold up.

that being said, in the world of spider-man, and even more so the much smaller world of the spider-man movie franchise, venom is a very exciting choice. he's got a great origin and had a great dynamic with peter parker in the early years of the character. if they stay pretty close to what was done (and it looks like they are), spidey 3 (and maybe even 4 if his story continues into that) will be a very good movie indeed.

so hopefully now you can understand why there's excitement for the movie but he seems underwhelming in terms of this contest.

I agree with the Tard on this one. I very recently found out that Brock was dead and the new Venom was the Scorpion. Two cool characters done away with for no good reason. Very disappointing. I don't see Venom getting out of round 2.
