In 1987, Dave Mazzucchelli drew one of the most influential Batman storylines ever, "Year One." Then he was sucked up by "serious" art, never to return. He co-created . . . mobster Carmine Falcone. Still, the Batman work of Tim Sale and Matt Wagner and the whole comic book series Legends of the Dark Knight were based on attempting to re-create the magic of that one storyline.
In 1939, Bob Kane conceived of the idea of a dark, mysterious crime-fighter called the Batman. In his twenty years as one of the main creative forces behind the Batman mythos, he co-created Commissioner Gordon, Joe Chill, Robin, Catwoman, Clayface, Hugo Strange, The Joker (disputed,) The Penguin, The Scarecrow, Two-Face, The Mad Hatter, Deadshot, and Mr. Freeze. After the first couple of years, most of the art was taken over by ghosts, but Kane was still brought in to do particularly significant tales, such as the return of Two-Face pictured above.
