I was watching a Jericho interview where he was asked which female wrestlers he would take right now if he could have anyone he wanted (Tessa Blanchard, Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair) and it got me to thinking, could you bring back the territories?
I know right now there is a fairly solid second tier of wrestling AEW, ROH, TNA, AAA, Lucha and I am sure others that I am missing. If I am not mistaken, there is also an NWA that actually uses the lineage of the old NWA title (wasn't that the title Cody won?) So, if that is all the case, would it make sense for them to unify under a single banner as they did back in the territory days?
None of them individually are going to top the WWE, the WWE just has too much of a head start and is entrenched, like it or not, as what wrestling IS these days. But if you had a unified territory system.......given that now you could easily follow each territory and follow your favorite wrestlers as they moved around, it seems like that could be something to challenge Vince.
Maybe I am crazy, and maybe there are good reasons why it couldn't work anymore, but it is fun to think about.
The Phillies are everything I hoped the Mets would be - a team that plays their fucking asses off for all 27 outs. They're never out of a game. Solly 10/20/09
The NWA has tried a few times to organize some smaller promotions across the country. ROH has tried working arrangements with a few international organizations. The problem is that once these second/third tier companies start pooling together, they want talent to be exclusive to them as much as possible and for the upper echelon of independent wrestlers, they make more by having the freedom to wrestle for anyone, anywhere, anytime they want. And then there's the egos involved of the people running these companies who think they are the best promoter/booker and want to put the guys they built over the wrestlers other guys/companies have built and the whole idea falls apart.
Shockingly, WWE is the closest thing to a territory system and will become even more so if/when they put together a NXT Mexico/Latin America and an NXT Japan.
