That still seems pretty odd. The ref's role is to protect Abyss' sanity? And if it was just a matter of keeping everyone safe from Abyss losing it then its kind of a weird thing to do under the circumstances. I mean, the mentally unstable psychopath was booked into the weapons match by his partner against his wishes and has been getting taunted and tempted for months. The fact that he's surrounded by weapons is enough. I get that the tacks are his favorites but still. It seems like an odd moment to say "

I think Mongo just saw a heel doing a heel thing and being a ref made an instinctive reaction to step in. The fact that the act wasn't in any way against the rules probably just didn't hit him right away. Honest mistake, really, and I wouldn't have brought it up if he hadn't been so comically bad the rest of the match (but again, strangely he was so bad that I thought it added to the insanity of the match in a good way). Mongo's not a ref and may not even have been in a wrestling ring this millennium. It happens.



EDIT: The "no rematch" stip would seem to keep him out of the mix for awhile and its probably the only reason I'm not expecting Sting to drop the belt next Thursday. The stip only really makes sense if its used to keep Joe away from the belt for awhile and in theory it would create a nice opportunity for AJ to step up and take the gold for the youngins. But AJ, Jarrett, Angle, Cage, Booker, whoever... I do expect to see Joe back in the mix when Sting loses the belt and I see no reason why he wouldn't get the belt. Just depends on the plans. For now the plans seem to be Sting and then someone who isn't Joe so I'd guess that would take us through to Lockdown or so.

If I had to bet I'd say Joe will be out of the title hunt until King of the Mountain/Slammiversary next June. Until then he's got Nash to deal with and can then probably find a nice role being the core of a Lethal Lockdown team/feud which you have to presume will be some kind of "TNA Originals" vs "Vets" match.

That's great, but I reiterate:

The reason I'm stopping the DML predictions thing isn't because making the picks is a chore, it's because putting the page together is a lot of work and I ain't doing it if I don't give a shit about the subject matter. It stops being fun and becomes work... and first and foremost, I do DML for fun. So I appreciate people's willingness to help out, but I'm honestly not putting the work into something I no longer care about.

It's also TNA so you have to wonder just how long that stip lasts. He did lose the match but it was very far from clean, so you have to at least consider that Cornette gives Joe one LAST chance at Sting on Impact. I think it'd be fucking pointless to do quick title changes like that, but I also think it was fucking pointless to give Sting the belt to begin with.

I've been a TNA defender elsewhere and I had to stick up for the show on the merits of liking all of the matches basically, even though I felt almost all of the wrong people won every match. And that main event finish just leaves such a bitter taste especially after Joe was actually looking like Joe during that match. His intensity and strikes were spot on and he even took it to a whole new level with that dive. But then there has to be a swerve ending that everyone saw coming a mile away, so much that I basically started yelling NO NO NO the very second I saw Nash.

If you wanna turn Nash and have him cost the belt, I'd much rather have had it been against Booker or Angle than fucking Sting who is pretty much just a waste at this point. He can't go anywhere near the top guys and he can't "JOE JOE JOE or JARRETT JARRETT JARRETT or FLAIR FLAIR FLAIR" every promo.

Yeah, Joe was awesome Sunday. AJ was pretty on his game too so along with JJ winning I think TNA was trying to make it a good showing for the "Originals" (I also think Lethal is going to take a role in this). But Joe was awesome and that stair kick thing was just insane. I actually kind of think TNA may think too much of us as fans because part of me thinks TNA figures "Joe's going to lose the belt but the fans will remember how bad ass he was so it will be fine." I think that's why TNA does so many damn screwjobs because they really do make the assumption that fans are smart enough to not only be interested in the match results. Which is stupid because wrestling fans are stupid. And the truth is that most of them won't even watch that match to see Joe kick ass. They'll just read "Nash turned on Joe to help Sting win" and make their judgments on that.

I guess its the fact that he's very intentionally taking a back drop onto concrete, running the risk of cracking his skull open, and if he misses his target even a little he's in serious trouble. Most big drops in wrestling tend to be onto tables or clearly rigged spots with a fairly large target meant to protect a guy. I mean, yeah. New Jack and Mick Foley are psychotic but there's still a basic "the table breaks and breaks my fall a bit" idea to it, or at the very least they're FALLING instead of moving vertically so I'd think they have a bit more control of their body, where they hit, and what part of the body hits. Joe's spot... I don't even know how the hell you think to do that. He had to aim himself and nail that landing and its not like he could have practiced the spot with Sting. Right? He's not THAT crazy. Right?

I suppose I can't argue the retard skater point but I guess the difference there is those idiots don't MEAN to wipe out and slam their backs down onto the concrete. It happens because they failed their stunt that in theory would have left them safe had they nailed it. Joe intended to do what those kids do when they fuck up.

Maybe he got a little more of Sting than it seems and he was able to push off and control his bump a little more. I don't. But just the leap itself strikes me as insane because, as I said, that wasn't a fall. Obviously gravity played its role and I guess it might not be all that different from leaping off the top of a cage/cell onto a table or fallen opponent, but I guess its just the relatively small drop that strikes me as the crazy factor. Combined with the fact that I can't think of too many occassions a wrestler did an unprotected bump on the concrete without a ladder, wrestler, or something protecting him.

I don't know, maybe you guys are right. Maybe its NOT as insane as it seems. But at the moment its sure as hell got me convinced.

That spot is amazing, and is the type of thing that TNA needs to focus on more.

I'm not encouraging TNA let their wrestlers kill themselves...but if Vince wants the WWE wrestling to be more realistic (i.e. slower, more boring), then I think TNA needs to market their athleticism and big spots. Don't increase their frequency, but showcase them as something different.

But TNA does so much wrong in the marketing department, it's not even funny. Didn't Dixie run a marketing/publicity company before TNA?
