Most amount of money you've won on one bet?
Does this include poker? I won about $600 in a poker tournament in Vegas, with about a $40 entry fee. I won nearly $300 in an on-line tourney that only cost me $5 to enter. And years ago I hit a six-team baseball parlay that was probably a couple hundred bucks on a $5 or $10 bet. My biggest single-game bet, however, was probably only about $100. I don’t lay out a lot of money on a single bet. My wife, who plays video poker, has brought home four W-2 forms from big jackpots.

Do you ever bet on your favorite teams? Does it make watching them that much more painful?
At times, but only because I think it’s a good bet regardless of the team. Professional gambler Dave Cokin was asked once if he had a favorite team. His response was “Nope. I rent them for a couple hours, and for that time they’re all my favorite teams.”

Biggest heartbreak on a bet?
To this day one still haunts me. A six-team college football parlay. I hit the first five; the sixth was Army and Syracuse. Syracuse had Donovan McNabb at quarterback. I had Army +12 late in the game, and they were only losing by six. Army had the ball, but was stopped on downs about the Syracuse 2-yard line with less than two minutes to go. I remember thinking, it’s cool, because ‘Cuse will just run out the clock. They go into the line once, maybe even twice, then McNabb drops back and heaves a bomb downfield. The receiver catches it, and an Army defender tackles him about the Army 10. I’m thinking, “SAVE!” I’m still good. Next play, probably would have been the last play of the game, Syracuse running back breaks through the line and goes in for the touchdown. They kick the extra point and Army loses by 13. Six-teamer, down the drain.

Fuck it, can you just give us a bunch of classic AA gambling anecdotes?
Man, there’s a bundle. They usually also involve drinking. Here’s a straight gambling one. I’m playing poker in Vegas, in the tournament mentioned above. It’s fairly early in the tournament, maybe an hour in. I have high pocket pair. Dude to my right raises, so I re-raise. He calls. Flop gives me trips. I raise, he re-raises. I go all in. He has me covered and follows. I flipped like trip 10s, he shows pocket Aces. I’m thinking I’m good. Except an Ace shows on the turn. I remember throwing up my hands, leaning back in my seat, knowing I’m done. I was still looking up at the ceiling when the River 10 came down to give me four of a kind. Dude to my left shouts, the guy who had the Aces shouts. I look down and just can’t believe my luck. That gave me the lead in the tourney and I never gave it up.

Another, involving drinking and the wife. There’s a cute cocktail waitress at the Siena where we stay and play, but she works graves. Kristine and I got in about 4 p.m. or so, and by 10 p.m. decided to pull an all-nighter. Kristine’s at a blackjack table, flirting with a Navy guy who could ALMOST be her son, and just having a great time. I’m across the pit at another table, playing cards, watching and laughing. The dealers are getting a kick out of it, too, because the only one who isn’t in on the laugh is the Navy guy. Dude’s just getting progressively drunker through the night, and by 2 a.m. Kristine almost got him to go outside with him for some fun and games. (As it was, she did get a room key from one of his friends, and did go up there, then realized that wasn’t so smart and she’d probably had enough to drink at that point.) Meanwhile, my cocktail waitress gets on duty about 11:30 p.m., and she and I are laughing and joking and she’s bringing me Seven & Sevens that are like 50/50 strength. She’s giving me updates on Kristine and the Navy boy, and by about 4 a.m. it’s like us, the dealers, my cocktail waitress and a few drunks. We’d even outlasted the Navy dudes. I wake up the next day; suns up. I look at the clock and it says 1-something. I did the monster double take on that. It’s like “Hell, I’ve slept half the day!”

I’m sure I’ll remember more as we go along. Ahh, I’m getting close to leaving work ffor the day, but if I don’t tell the story, someone remind me of “Caauuuuuuck-taaaaaaiiiiilllllls.”

Not one you would call “real.” I mean, I’ve been in a few drunken party/bar fights, but it didn’t start with me and I just shoved some people around, like the 24th guy off the bench in a baseball fight. In college, however, I would instigate stuff and then put my (bigger) friends in front of me. Yes, even then I was a chickenshit heel. You gotta live the gimmick.

Nope. My first wife did, but that’s as close as I’ve ever come.

Graduating from college. I’m the first from my family to do so. Remembering the pride of my parents that day is something I’ll never forget.

There’s some things that, in retrospect, I wish I hadn’t done, but everything happens for a reason, and as long as you learn from those moments, you can’t wish they hadn’t happened. Life isn’t supposed to be perfect.

Getting Josh Hamilton back from Gimmick. (If it wasn’t Gimmick, I apologize for naming you as the bonehead who allowed me to do that.)

Your worst (aside from Soriano)?
Tim Hudson for a seventh rounder. Six innings later Huddy blows out his elbow and hasn’t pitched since.

What do you do for a living?
I’m a Systems Analyst for EDS on the Medi-Cal account. Not sure that really says much. Essentially I’m a problem solver/organizer/guys who’s known to get things done. If a project is screwed up, or we expected it to be screwed up by the customer, I’m on it.

Who is your favorite wrestler?
Ric Flair is the default answer. But I always like the smarmy chickenshit heels like Eddie Gilbert, John Tatum, Jerry Lawler (in his prime), Nick Bockwinkel. There’s always one in every association, because he’s the guy who can turn heels into faces.

Probably the Figure 4. But it would never be good enough to make anyone submit so I’d always have to use the ropes or other nefarious means.

Something simple that would go along with a nickname of “Gentleman,” “Gorgeous” or something else flamboyant yet gutless. Which reminds me, Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin is another of my favorites. So was a guy named Exotic Adrian Street, who mentored a dude named Diamond Timothy Flowers III.

What is your favorite wrestling memory?
My dad’s story of meeting Moon Dog Mayne and The Crusher at the gas station he worked at. I’ve told it a few times over the years. Do I need to tell it again? I think Mikey knows it by heart by now.

What is your least favorite movie of all time?
I know exactly what it is but can’t think of the title. Mid-80s, went on a mixed date with friends. Chick flick. Three hours of this woman dieing. I remember when she finally died—wait, I remember, Terms of Endearment. OK, now back to the story—I said out loud “Thank God, she’s finally dead.”

If you could be any kind of pro athlete, what would you be, what would be your position, and what would be your number?
I was a water polo goalie, and I always liked that position. You’re a leader by example, not necessarily by title. So let’s say soccer goalie. I did play soccer as a kid. I’d wear 11 or 29, since that’s my month and date of birth.

Your favorite sporting moment?
It might be my race at Far Westerns (swimming) when I was 12 years old. It was the biggest event I ever qualified for, essentially a Western Regional that was a step away from age group nationals. Finishing my first marathon and half-Ironman were pretty cool, too. But if I ever qualify for the Boston Marathon, that will trump them all.

Your least favorite sporting moment?
Dennis Eckersley serving up the home run ball to Kirk Gibson.

Do you have any diseases/ailments?
Just old-age stuff. I have high cholesterol, which is hereditary, and I talk a statin for it. I have creaky knees from running and swimming, a bone spur in my ankle from twisted ankles playing hoops and running, and had surgery on my right shoulder from general overuse from swimming.

What is your drink of choice?
When I think drink of choice, I think hard liquor. So it would be Maker’s Mark whiskey, on the rocks, straight up or as a Manhattan. Aide from that, it’s a Sauvignon Blanc on hot summer day sitting on the back patio or an old vine Zinfandel in front of the fireplace in the dead of winter.

What is your drug of choice?
Alcohol and caffeine. I don’t even take aspirin. Smoked pot once in my life; didn’t like. Held an unlit cigarette between my lips once—disgusting.

Who's your favorite rapper?
Old school Public Enemy. “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” is an album that does not get the credit it deserves. Of course, this is all before Flavor Flav went all VH-1 on us.


If I were to come out and visit again, where would you take me to eat?
Are we eating to drink, or eating to eat? If we’re eating to drink, I’d go to El Patrone, which ia a couple blocks down from Hoppy’s, where we went last time. They make Jack Daniels marguaritas that kill, and the seafood dishes are just perfect. But the cool thing is on Saturday nights they have a mariachi band and Mexican soccer on behind the bar. The place gets to be a real party without getting too “college-ish.”


If we’re eating to eat, I’d go to Arpeggio’s. The place opened a couple years ago near our home, and we’ve gotten to know the owners, Tom and Jerry. Yes, Tom and Jerry, like the cartoon, and they’re a couple. Tom’s the chef and business guy, and creates these awesomely unique dishes with spicy fruit sauces. Jerry is the front man, and tries to sit with every table for about five minutes to see how you like the food, what you like, what you don’t like. And they make this really good bread pudding using raisin bread. I don’t like bread pudding, but this stuff is awesome. Finally, I think there’s a rule that at least half a clientle has to be gay at any time. On weekend nights, it’s a flaming San Francisco hangout.

Anyone remember the “reality” show Average Joe? Where one guy was a real person and the rest were actors but they pretended to people real people? In an unfortunate sense, my wildest night in college happened about a month into college. Typical dorm beer party. Hot chick in black leather, bead-studded hat and drab, bland clothes starts dancing with me. Grabs me by my oh-so-not-cool-anymore thin black rock-n-roll ties and drags me out of the party and up to her room. We’d both been drinking a lot. Starts getting hot, and in my haze I remember the phone ringing, her picking it up and saying something to the effect of “Hi! You’re where? Downstairs?” She then hangs up and we keep making out. About 10 minutes later, she must have left the room before the boyfriend appears on our floor. Next thing I know, the girl’s roommate comes into the room, says “You’re with me. We have to get you out of here.” We walk out of the room and I see this guy with the girl I was just with. He’s one of those guys who wears extra large T-shirts, they still fit tight and it’s not because he’s fat. Yet somehow I managed to be a partial dick and as I pass by him say “Hey, dude.”

So the next day, me and the girl get back together. I find out she’s bi-sexual, that was her boyfriend, the roommate was her girlfriend, and the boyfriend was clueless as to both me and the girlfriend. We only went out once more after that, but she left me with one cool thought. She said to me: “Think about it this way. Out of all the guys AND girls at the party, I picked you.”

A bit. Canada and the states. Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Florida, Vermont, Massachusetts, Wyoming, Montana. I have a friend who is an ultra runner, and I crew and pace him. So where he races, I get to go.

Went to: I love Seattle and San Francisco. Vermont was beautiful; so lush and green, even in July. Boston was fun. Toronto was pretty cool, also. Winnipeg was surprisingly nice, as long as it was summer. The Chicago airport is by far the best airport in the United States. There’s this great microbrew/sports bar, and when ever I have to fly back east I try to do it through Chicago with a couple hours layover just to get toasty on their beers.

I can’t really think of one, as I don’t identify myself through other people and characters. For that same reason, I don’t have heroes or idols, and I’ve rarely asked for autographs. But to choose one, it would be Kevin Costner’s character in “For the Love of the Game.” He’s a pitcher at the end of his career, getting by on smarts and experience way beyond his physical abilities. That’s the way I’ve always performed as an athlete. Even in my prime, I out-thought people more than out-athleticed them.

See above. Though for pure hilarity, I wouldn’t mind being Nigel Tufnel from Spinal Tap.

Yes.

B. If so, what are your favorites to cook? To eat?
When it comes right down to it, cooking is pretty simple. With that, I can cook just about anything. It’s simply a combination of meat/starch/vegetable/sauce. Being a minimalist, I usually combine everything together. That means dishes like pasta, or fried rice. Very rarely will I bake fish or some other meat without eventually cutting it up and mixing it into pasta, rice or couscous. I do make a mean lasagna, which is kind of outside the box in the sense that you actually have to layer the food rather than mix it. And I love Mexican food. Anything in a tortilla works for me.

Yes. In fact, I just had it for lunch.

Weird stuff in sushi is all relative. Eel would probably be the most unique, but I wouldn’t consider it weird since eel is a regular staple in sushi. Weird things in sushi would be chicken, roast beef and turkey.

Damn, what’s with the food fetish? Flower petals in a salad? Escargo? Those might be the strangest. There’s very few foods I’ve disliked enough not to eat again. Brussel sprouts, for instance, fall onto that list.

I’m so not into celebrities. Like athletes, they’re probably best left at arm’s length. Right now, I’d say either Keira Knightly or Linsay Lohan. Right now, I think I might have a shot with Linsay.

Kevin Johnson. Current mayor of Sacramento and former Phoenix Sun point guard. Met him at a local restaurant before he even considered running for mayor. He’s done a lot of good for the bad areas of Sacramento. Met a bunch of athletes in the 80s. Interviewed Randall Cunningham when he was still at UNLV. Tony Schalub (The Monk) sat a row behind us at a local theater show because his sister was in the show. He was cool.

Not a lot, actually. All in California: Fairfield, San Francisco, Ridgecrest, Chico, Sacramento.

That’s easy. The American River Bike Trail. 32 miles of paved trail that runs from downtown to the suburb of Folsom. It’s great for riding and running.

We talked about this at Hoppy's a bit, didn't we? Here's a quick thought, with the current storylines in place:

AA and JA are the OOWF champs, and everything is going along as smoothly as it can for a couple of chickenshit heels. They decide they need an enforcer, and call up an old friend--Donnie Viper. Viper becomes their enforcer, and during one match ends up carrying Johnny backstage. Somehow, AA gets the idea that Donnie has eyes for Johnny (which gives Viper plenty of reasons to say "I'M NOT A HOMO!") and starts feuding with Viper. But Viper still wants to be their enforcer, which leads to weekly issues between AA and Viper during the tag matches.

Eventually, Viper says the hell with it and gets AA in a singles match. He pins AA, and The Rick grants him a tag team title shot. So Viper finds the one guy who knows TCH the best--Stank. (Mainly because that gives us a reason to bring Blown Spot in to revive D&D/TCH promos.) Stank and Viper would win the titles at one point. But then in the blowoff match, Viper turns on Stank, reunited with TCH and helps them regain their titles.
