Clarissa Explains It All vs. Spectreman - Someone's going to have to help me out here. I've never heard of either of these shows, and I'm not interested doing the research. So far, Loki's pretty adamant about the superiority of Spectreman, but he's also got the WD-40 thing going on, so I'm not sure he's to be trusted.

He-Man vs. Samuari Jack - It really is a shame Samurai Jack's going to get killed here. It's a really fun show.

Challenge of the Gobots vs. Mr. T - "Go-bots, Go-bots, Migh-ty ro-bots, Migh-ty ve-hi-cles, GO-BOTS!"

Justice League vs. Hong Kong Phooey - sorry, Tex, but HKP predates me by a few years. While I've heard about it, I've never seen it. JL, on the other hand, was a fine show. It'll get my vote.

Inspector Gadget vs. The Wuzzles - I was late for school many mornings because I was watching Inspector Gadget. The same cannot be said of the Wuzzles, fun though it was.

The Spectreman case:

Since half of you have no idea what this show was, I’ll give you a bit of edumaction and maybe get the show to earn more than one vote.

Tex made reference to Ultraman up above. For those who remember that, these (and others) are the same basic show. I think Spectreman was the first of these to arrive in the US, however. All of you out there know the descendants of these shows, however: Power Rangers. DynaMan. Beetle Borgs. Any of a hundred thousand shows where someone dresses up in a nifty costume with a helmet and fights giant foam monsters. Sometimes they drive vehicles, sometimes they have weapons, and sometimes they fight an army of cannon fodder before facing the giant mutated creature and their master (who is usually an alien or something similar who wants to conquer the world). But the same basic set up is always the same.

These shows originated in Japan during the 60s and 70s, were badly dubbed into English and then the better ones were shown on American TV, with Spectreman being one of the, if not the, original. These shows were much different from the American shows of the time and became very successful. That success was enough to allow other Japanese shows to follow suit and become translated into English and shown on US TV. This idea spilled over to cartoons as well, and are the reasons Americans from the 80s have fond memories of shows like “Transformers”, “Voltron”, “Robotech”, “G-Force” and “StarBlazers” (what – you didn’t think those shows were actually US-based, did you? Silly American!).

Spectreman also aged surprisingly well, especially compared to other shows from that same time period. The special effects aren’t great when compared to ones of today, but they’re still decent. The screen writing, while a bit simplistic, appealed to adults as well as younger people.

All in all, the show is decent as a stand alone, but is one of those shows that has legitimate historical value.

Actually, applying my "hotness of cast" standard Power Rangers probably beats out Clarissa. Because while Melissa Joan Hart is a pleasant memory from my more formidable years Amy Jo Johnson was an intrical part. The Pink Power Rangers > Clarissa. Hands down. Or uh... something like that...

So the question is, did Spectreman have a hot chick who could have made an impact on my young years (and who ideally was old enough so that I can look at pictures of her now without feeling dirty)?

If you don't have a hot chick you're of no use to me.

Spectreman is not responsible for Pink Power Ranger. Nope, sorry. Not buying. It was the wonderful foresight of the Power Rangers' casting to give a job to such an amazingly hot woman who could do gymnastics. And to feature her doing said gymnastics in tights that showed off her great ass as often as possible.

Bullshit, dude. As I said earlier, Spectreman paved the way for Japanese shows to come to America. Without Spectreman, you never would have been able to oogle Amy Jo Johnson, because Power Rangers would never have been created. Power Rangers is a descendant of those Japanese shows.

Nope, without the Japanese influence the best you could have hoped for was that the spinoff shows of Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street had a cute librarian. And she certainly wouldn't have been doing splits.

Sorry. I'm not buying it. They were already making big foam monster movies. Big foam monster TV was a natural progression. If it wasn't Spectreman it would have been Ultraman or Kikoman or Awesomeman. Pink Power Ranger would have found her way into my life somehow.
