I'm not a big fan of the Association. I'm not really a fan period, at least until the end of the playoffs. But I felt THIS was worthy of beginning a thread for the season.
Marbury, in town to attend to his residence there and conduct some business, bought a ticket for the Knicks-Lakers game and had a baseline, courtside seat near film director Spike Lee.
"I didn't create this, this is all their doing," Marbury said of his status as a nonplayer with the Knicks despite being under contract for more than $21 million. "I'm still earning my check by doing nothing. I'm staying in shape. My mindset is to enjoy my life."
Rubbing stupid decisions in people's faces. The old "buy a ticket" deal. This is like a real life wrestling feud!

I'm glad someone else started this thread. Because I'm about to hijack it.
I have officially given up on the Charlotte Bobcats. I have no faith in the ownership, the office or the team. I do not forsee this team ever becoming successful unless they make like the Hornets and get the hell out.
When the Hornets left, I almost swore off the NBA forever. Upon hearing that the team will be getting an expansion team, I decided to stick around. I liked Okafer, and, being a Tar Heel fan, I enjoyed Felton and May being drafted. But it seems like there has been multiple bad decisions and they don't see to be getting any better. May, God love him, has been a fat lazy piece of shit bust. Morrison has been an uninspiring, mustached, diabetic bust. The Cats traded for J Rich, which was OK, but they did NOTHING to get an frontcourt help with Okafer. Then they draft Augustine, who has been alright, but again, front court help! And then, their latest trade, where Richardson and Dudley go to Phoniex for Bell and Diaw and Singletary. Well, they got some help in the front court, but then Raja Bell only plays 8 minutes last night? And the rumor mill is swirling that Gerald Wallace will be traded to a contender, meaning that the Cats will once again have a fucking disappointing season and I'm sick of it.
Which brings me to my next point. I don't "love" the NBA, but I am a fan. But I am abandoning the Bobcats because I feel that they have abandoned me, one of their 12 fans. And I want a rooting interest in a team. Just not the Bobcats and not the Hornets (the other team that cheated on me.) So I'm looking for another team.
Rule 19. Once you choose a team, you're stuck with that team for the rest of your life ... unless one of the following conditions applies:
Your team moves to another city. All bets are off when that happens. In fact, if you decided to turn off that sport entirely, nobody would blame you.
This happened. And...
The owner of your favorite team treated his fans so egregiously over the years that you couldn't take it anymore -- you would rather not follow them at all then support a franchise with this owner in charge. Just for the record, I reached this point with the Boston Bruins about six years ago. When it happens, you have two options: You can either renounce that team and pick someone else, or you can pretend they're dead, like you're a grieving widow.
This happened too.
So, I am looking for a new team. I've done some narrowing down, and I think that the Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, and Portland Trailblazers are my finalists. But I'm still want some help. Who should I like and why? Where should I go to have my faith in professional basketball restored?
Thanks for all 5 of you who will inevitably read this thread at some point. Thanks again if you decide to respond.

Clearly you should be supporting the Boston Celtics, much like all the cool people do.
The Knicks? Are you serious? The Wizards? At least your Western Conference teams are worthy of support; except maybe Phoenix, they're doing their level-best to gut that franchise. Trailblazers are an exciting, but very young team, Spurs are the wily vets who are clearly on the downside of their career. Their style is an acquired taste, but lots of people like it. The Nuggets could very well win the whole thing this year, trading Iverson, who was limiting Anthony's shots, and bringing in a top-5 (maybe top-3) Point Guard to run the offense in Chauncey Billups. They're deep, they play solid; they DONT play defense.
Wait. You're looking to abandon your team because of bad decision making, disappointing play, lazy and unmotivated players, and an owner you don't believe has the fans' best interest in... and you're thinking of rooting for the Knicks?
I mean, that entire "they got ____ which seemed like it might be good but wasn't" paragraph sounds like every Knicks comment I've made the last 5 years. You know, the ones that weren't me wishing death on the owner.
EDIT: And no, don't go with the Celtics. Then you're just a bandwagoner and a tool and you'll never have any respect.
Or don't do either. If you can't find an image you like at either than don't force it. Just give me something you like and which will look good on the board.

To answer the criticism as to why the Knicks are on my list - I'm under the impression that with the new gernal manager, they are generally turning the franchise around. And I like Mike D as the coach. Besides, OMG, Lebron in 2010!!!!!
And no, I will not be a Celtics fan. Absolutely violates my "No Boston" rule.
I'm not looking to be a bandwagoner who jumps on the bandwagon of a team that happens to be really good, I want to be a fan of a team that I can actually get on board with. Bad seasons will happen from time to time - I can deal with that. I can't deal with being a fan of a shitty franchise.
The Knicks probably shouldn't be on my list if that's the case, but they are there. And the Wizards are close enough here for me to be a fan of them, which is why they are on the list.

If nothing else you've got the naive optimism of a Knicks fan down. But if you want an owner who won't anger you James Dolan is not your man.

Anyways, thanks for the replies.
The Wizards are even more poorly run than the Knicks are.
LeBron will be a Brooklyn Net in 2010. All this cap clearing, and the Knicks...well...will fail again.
I agree with Mike. Be a Portland Fan. I'd say be a Hawks fan but I pretty much hate every player on their team. New Orleans is a fun team too, but for obvious reasons you can't support them.
Lucky's right about the Celtics thing. I forgot about that. Sorry.
The Rockets, son. Fun to watch and deep. Injuries are just killing them.
Portland, Dallas and Denver are good picks, too. A couple of those crappy teams have huge upsides if you want to get in on the ground floor. Golden State, the Clippers, and the Grizzlies have some solid players. Thanks for not saying the Lakers. And I also have the no Boston rule.
But honestly, stick with your team. You can like two teams at once. Seriously, just work with it.
Go with Portland. They're fun to watch. The Nuggets will always disappoint you. If you want to consider teams that aren't on your list I'd normally recommend the Jazz, despite Boozer being Boozer.

and WHY wasn't Philly on your list? Hmmm?
The Phillies are everything I hoped the Mets would be - a team that plays their fucking asses off for all 27 outs. They're never out of a game. Solly 10/20/09

Because I also have a "no Philly" rule too.
Portland has been a "favorite" over the past few years, especially with their management. I have absolutely loved the way the team has drafted the past few years too. I like Denver for George Karl, former UNC guy, but that doesn't mean shit in the pros, seeing I'm dropping the Bobcats, who have Jordan at GM, Brown as Coach, and at least two UNC players on the roster.
I'll make my decision on January 1st. New year, with a new team.
No love for Orlando? They have the best young center in the game, went for 4-1 on the West Coast without that center, and just took out San Antonio. Nobody will want to play this team in the playoffs.

Eric, just decide not to have an allegiance to any team and become an advocate for Tarheel players around the league. I mean I'm a Knicks fan but I don't watch the NBA very often and when I do I'm usually sucked into watching for David Lee. I also seek Hawks games to watch Horford or Bulls games to watch Noah, T-wolves games for Brewer & Richard. Just watch the games and enjoy your players. Pro Basketball has very little redeeming qualities.
Oh, and out of your list I'd choose the Spurs. They have a history of success. I think their coach is a pretty funny guy. Tim Duncan is everything I want in a pro athlete. Ginobilli flops a bit like all European players but when he isn't doing that he is fun to watch. And Tony Parker is amazing to watch play and his wife is hot. The choice is clearly the Spurs if you have to choose.

Sixers will OWN the Magic in the playoffs

The Sixers? I'll buy the Cavs, Celtics, and the Pistons. Even though I think the Magic would push the Cavs and Pistons. Celtics are easily the class of the conference right now and probably the entire league.

the regular season means nothing. The Sixers will turn it on in the playoffs. We have a plan
